Ryan, nice article. I believe there are 2 methods to get something like this started in the enterprise, which I detail here http://ericlandes.com/Blogs/tabid/56/EntryId/18/Agile-Enterprise-Strategy.aspx.

I have one question though, what are these celebrations you talk about? :-) Not all companies are doing that in these tough economic times. I applaud Rally for continuing to do that.

Great Post.

I am encouraged to see Deming's Quality Improvement Cycle of Plan, Do, Check/Study, Act (PDC/SA, which was inspired by Walter Shewhart's work, starting to surface on a regular basis in the Agile and Lean community at large.

It has been part of my belief and assertion for the last few years that the Plan, Do, Check/Study, Act cycle is the underpinning of all that is Agile and Lean and it makes sense to leverage it.

It is evident to me that SCRUM has its roots in PDC/SA.

Plan - ties to Release and Sprint Planning in SCRUM.

Do - ties to the actualization of 2-4 week Sprints.

Check/Study - ties to Daily Stand-ups, Sprint Retrospectives and Sprint Reviews.

Act - ties to adapting based on what we learn from the Stand-ups, Sprint Retrospectives and Sprint Reviews.

Very nice post. Most Lean practitioners discuss PDCA in a short time cycle and your description of using it in as a tool for longer duration is outstanding. Actually, it makes me sit back and reflect on why I am using so many tools for immediate results!

Thanks
