Tim Miller - CEO

Tim Miller - CEOTim Miller is a serial entrepreneur with over 14 years experience in managing, building and growing software companies from startup to Fortune 1000. Before joining Rally as CEO, Tim started Avitek, a 40-person, custom software development firm. He grew Avitek to over $10 million in revenues before BEA Systems acquired Avitek in 1999. Tim helped create BEA’s highly successful Portal Development Group and then served as Vice President of BEA's Accelerated Development Centers where he managed over 150 employees and over $40 million in revenue.

Tim is actively involved in his community as a member of Social Venture Partners and is a member of the Rocky Mountain Chapter of Young Presidents' Organization. He received his MS degree from the University of Colorado at Boulder, a MBA from ASU at Tempe, and a BA in Economics from the University of Colorado at Boulder.


Ryan Martens - Founder & Chief Technology Officer

Ryan Martens - Founder & Chief Technology OfficerRyan Martens brings to Rally proven leadership in dynamic, high growth software companies and is an expert in assisting organizations transition from traditional development processes to more Agile techniques. Before founding Rally Software Development - his fourth software start-up - Ryan directed the corporate adoption of Internet technologies within Qwest Communications, and then moved on to co-found Avitek, a Boulder-based custom software development firm where he served as Vice President of Marketing & Business Development. Ryan's successful efforts at Avitek culminated in an acquisition by BEA Systems in 1999. At BEA, Ryan served as Director of Product Management for the eCommerce applications division and he was instrumental in growing that division to more than $50 million in revenue within its first twelve months.

Ryan is an alumnus of the Colorado Chapter of Young Entrepreneurs' Organization and is also involved in a variety of community organizations including Colorado Conservation Trust, the Knight Foundation and the Entrepreneur Foundation of Colorado. Most recently, Ryan was named as a semi-finalist for the 2006 Ernst & Young Entrepreneur Of The Year award. Ryan received his Masters in Business Administration and his Bachelors of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Colorado at Boulder.


Don Hazell - EVP Worldwide Sales & Field Operations

Don Hazell - EVP Worldwide Sales & Field OperationsDon Hazell has over 25 years of experience taking technology companies into new markets and establishing leadership positions. During his six years at Weblogic and BEA Systems, Don held several vice president positions where he was responsible for strategic planning, new business penetration and major account management. Don helped build BEA’s WebXpress Division, ISV Channels, and Central Region Field Organizations, where each of his teams grew revenue to over $75M while securing many of the largest sales contracts in BEA’s history.

Don’s experience includes 12 years at Unisys Corporation and four years in the relational database and tools marketplace as a sales manager with Sybase and Ingres. Don received his undergraduate degree from the University of Colorado at Boulder and his Masters in Business Administration from California State University, Long Beach.


Chad Varra - Vice President, Finance & Accounting

Chad Varra - Vice President, Finance & AccountingChad brings 15 years of finance and operations experience for both publicly traded and privately held technology companies. Chad most recently served as the Corporate Controller for ChannelPoint, Inc., a provider of ecommerce software solutions and applications. During his 4 years at ChannelPoint, Chad played key roles in all mergers and acquisitions, planning, contract negotiations, and S-1 filing activities. From 1995 - 2000, Chad served as a Manager of External Financial Reporting at Storage Technology Corporation, a publicly traded provider of information storage and management solutions. Prior to that, Chad served as a senior audit and business advisor with Arthur Andersen LLP, an international public accounting firm.

Chad received a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting from Colorado State University. He is Certified Public Accountant in the state of Colorado and is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Colorado Society of Certified Public Accountants.


Evan Campbell - Vice President, Professional Services

Evan Campbell - Vice President, Professional ServicesThroughout his 15 years in the software industry, Evan has had responsibility for Agile transformations from the team level to the boardroom. Prior to joining Rally, he served as Chief Technology Officer and Vice President of Professional Services at SolutionsIQ, a 450-person IT consulting company and one of Rally’s strategic partners. In that role, he was responsible for leading the company’s world-class software development practices, and he created its Agile consulting practice, among others. Evan also served as CTO of Versatile Mobile Systems (VMS), a publicly traded software company, which he joined as a result of the company’s acquisition of Mobiquity, an e-commerce startup where he was a co-founder and CTO.

Evan is a Certified ScrumMaster (CSM) and a Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA). He holds an MBA from Rollins College and an MA in International Affairs, Economics and Finance from George Washington University. Prior to his career in technology, Evan served in the U.S. Army as an Airborne Ranger and Green Beret.


Richard Leavitt - Vice President, Product Marketing

Richard Leavitt - Vice President, Product MarketingRichard is a seasoned software executive and entrepreneur with extensive experience launching successful application development tools and enterprise applications. Richard was co-founder of Software Edge, the 1993 Jolt award-winning creator of Defect Control System purchased by Serena/Merant and now called PVCS Tracker©. He went on to help start Requisite, Inc. and the RequisitePro© product line before Rational Software acquired it in 1997. Most recently Richard was Vice President of Product Management for Insightful Corp. (NASDAQ:IFUL) where he directed overall product, marketing and sales support strategies for this vendor of statistical programming tools and custom business intelligence applications. Prior to this, Richard ran sales, marketing and business development organizations for enterprise application vendor Mobilize, Inc.

Richard began his career with Hewlett Packard’s test and measurement group and has operated his consulting business, MarketWin, LLC., since 1994. Richard received his BSEE from the University of Colorado at Boulder and has been a board member and advisor to numerous technology start-up companies.


Zach Nies - Vice President, Products

Zach Nies - Vice President, ProductsZach Nies brings close to 20 years of engineering and product development experience to Rally’s innovative products. Prior to joining Rally, Zach served as Principal Architect and Director of Systems Architecture for Level 3 Communications and founded a small start up which was quickly acquired by the publicly traded Creo, Inc, now a division of Kodak. He also served as Chief Software Architect at Quark, where he provided the overarching technological vision for the company. Zach’s product vision has won numerous industry awards, including Jolt Product Excellence awards, Seybold HotPicks and the prized MacWorld Best of Show. Zach has served on standards bodies such as the W3C's HTML working group and currently serves on the board of directors for Agile Denver.

At the age of 13, Zach began commercially publishing software and, at age 16, started a successful consulting business. A Boettcher Scholar, Zach received his BS with distinction in Computer Science Engineering from the University of Colorado at Boulder. He spends his spare time tuning his golf swing and spending time with his family.


Steve Willcox - Vice President, Engineering

Steve Willcox - Vice President, EngineeringWith more than 27 years of software engineering experience, Steve leads Rally’s engineering team to develop the company’s leading Agile lifecycle management solutions. He has deep expertise in designing, programming and leading software teams, with a specific focus on building software tools for software engineers. Before joining Rally in 2003, Steve was the lead architect and engineer at BEA for the WebLogic Portal 1.0 product. Prior to that, he was the lead architect at Avitek, where he pioneered some of the first Java web applications to be rolled out for commercial use. Steve began his internet software engineering career at Ziff-Davis (later acquired by AT&T) in 1993 working on tools for their internet content portal. Earlier in his career, Steve worked for several start-ups including Index Technology and Easel Corporation building GUI based tools for software developers.

Steve received high honors for a BA in Economics at the University of Rhode Island before the turn of the century (and before there was such a thing as a CS degree).


Fred Holt - Vice President, Human Resources

Steve Willcox - Vice President, EngineeringWith more than 20 years of senior leadership experience in Human Resources management, Fred has a track record of helping complex organizations maximize their vital human capital to create highly successful enterprises. His expertise with small and large businesses gained through two decades of consulting and full-time leadership assignments results in a pragmatic approach that serves to align human resource initiatives with business objectives. Fred’s previous roles have positioned him as a catalyst for developing a productive organization and business infrastructure. His areas of expertise include human resource management, recruiting and retention, organization development, and merger and acquisitions analysis and integration. Most recently, Fred served as senior vice president of human resources for Vallent Corporation, a global provider of network performance management software that was successfully grown before being purchased by IBM’s Tivoli group.

Fred graduated with honors receiving undergraduate degrees in Psychology and Sociology from Lake Superior State University as well as an MS in Industrial/Organizational Psychology from Western Michigan University.
