Operations team joins the blogging fun
Hi Folks -
There ’s a ton of great content here from our Engineering team and we hope you are enjoying the blog. One of the great things about working in Operations at Rally is that you are really contributing to the service that is delivered – we love what we do and want to contribute however we can. Rally Engineering & Operations work largely like one big team and most of our important decisions & discussions take placed as a group – it works pretty well. This isn’t the way all companies work, but it works well for us. So, we though it only makes sense for Operations to start sharing how we do things with the world.
So why would you care about what the Operations Team at Rally is up to? Here are some peeks into how we do things that we hope to expand on in the future:
- We deploy to production weekly, unattended and scheduled in advance – the process is fully automated. Much of the time this is a zero downtime deploy, we are working to get 100% of our deploys zero downtime. We are also working toward continuous deployment.
- We collect metrics on just about every aspect of system performance, client performance & customer use. We track pretty much anything we can think of and we’re thinking of new things all the time.
- We aggregate usage metrics into a health index that helps us understand who is using the service well and who we should be working with to make sure the tool is doing what they need.
- Our availability over the last 180 days is 99.95% and we’re constantly striving to make that better.
- We support thousands of business customers on a relatively small hardware footprint of about 10 physical machines & some storage infrastructure. Keeping our application efficient has been a big focus for the Engineering & Operations teams.
- We have a culture of collaboration & teamwork – Rally is a great place to be in Engineering or Operations.
Realizing some of you may be more interesting in the Operations content than the Engineering posts – we wanted to point out that you can get access to the Operations posts by themselves by using the category ‘operations’ in your RSS feed. The URLs for Operations content are below, but we encourage you to subscribe to all the posts, we all work together to make our system what it is.
