We’ve been working on our #1 most promoted Idea in Rally Ideas, “Allow multiple Rally screens to be open in different browser tabs simultaneously”. Over the last few months, we’ve been releasing increments of this feature weekly, and we’re excited to say that the final increment of this feature was released Saturday, February 11th. I won’t bore you with all the technical details, but this required a complete overhaul of our front end architecture, and we’re very excited to share the results with you.

The big news is that this new architecture also allowed us to roll out the new menus and dashboard sharing you’ve already seen, and importantly, sets the stage for all sorts of additional cool features we’ll be releasing throughout 2012. For now, let’s talk about what’s in Rally, today:

Short version

  • You can copy the link from the browser’s address bar to share your view over email or embed in a web page.
  • You can run Rally in multiple browser tabs at once, including different projects on different tabs.

Rally simultaneously in multiple browser tabs

Longer version

  • You’ll notice new page titles that provide context when viewing a browser’s tab, bookmark or history.
  • Links change as you navigate and include the project scope. You can have tabs open for project A and project B at the same time. For example, you can send a link to project A’s backlog to Karyn and a link to project B’s backlog to Mark.
  • Links also contain information from the specific sections of a detail page. You can send a link that will bring Tamara to a view of all the Children associated with a Parent User Story.
  • Links contain information about shared custom views. For example, you can send a link to Craig that will bring him to the shared custom view of your choice.
  • Links work on pages filtered by Iteration, Release or Program. This effects the following pages specifically: Iteration Status, Release Status, Team Status, Program Status and Work Product Status.

We hope you enjoy this new capability, and are excited to knock off the #1 Idea in Rally Ideas!

But wait, there’s more!

Hot on the heels of releasing the ability to Share Custom Dashboards, we have added the ability for a Dashboard to scoped to a specified time box. This powerful feature lets you set up a Dashboard with time box-scoped panels, allowing you to scroll through Releases and Iterations and see a snapshot of information specific to that release or iteration.

Note that not all panels are time box-enabled. If you have a favorite panel you don’t see in the list, let us know by emailing us at usability@rallydev.com.

This was a lot of work, and our team is thrilled to share it with you.

Enjoy!

All good things come to end, right? We think so, and we think that while good things come to end, there is opportunity for new, better things. Pages. We are deprecating our legacy Backlog page and Users page. The updated versions of these pages have been out for awhile as part of our beta program. Less than two percent of our users are accessing the legacy pages.

With the new Backlog page, you can take advantage of the following enhancements:

  • In-place edit: Double click on a grid cell to edit
  • Customize your columns: Via the Column component
  • Bulk-edit values, including Tags and Parent: Select more than one row to see the Bulk-edit gear
  • Quickly add a new work item: Via the + Add New component
  • Quickly filter and find existing work items: Via the Filter row
  • Access common actions: Via the new gear menu

  • Customize your columns: Via the Column component
  • Quickly add a new user: Via the + Add New component
  • Quickly find existing users: Via the Filter row
  • Copy a user: Via the Actions menu

I would like to thank the users that participated in the beta programs and provided valuable feedback.

Have you ever wished that you could distribute URLs from your shared custom views and recipients could navigate directly to your view?

Now, you can do just that. You’ve created a shared custom view to track a key initiative in Rally. You designate a custom view as shared by selecting the Shared View checkbox in the custom view editor, see below.

sharedCustomView

Scenario

Things are going well. The team is cranking through stories. You’d like an easy way to share this information your stakeholders. It is now easier than ever. Simply copy and send the URL from your shared custom view. Your stakeholders can simply navigate the link to see that things are going well.

Additionally, your stakeholders can bookmark this link to track progress in real time.

Have a great Thanksgiving,

Steve

I’ve always wanted to be able to copy my awesome custom views.
Now I can. You can too. On all pages that have custom views you will now see the familiar copy icon, see below.

smallCustView

First, select the existing custom view you would like to use as a starting point for your new custom view; then select the copy icon; an editor will appear, see below.
smallEditor2

All of your conditions from the original custom view are preserved. The text “(Copy of)” is added to the Name. Note that, if the  “Set as Default” and “Shared View” checkboxes were checked on the original custom view they are unchecked on the copy.

As a reminder, you can create custom views on the following pages: User Stories, Defects, Tasks and Test Cases.

My email inbox has been stuffed over the last month or so.

Since we enabled a preview of our new navigation system, over 1,200 of our users have given us direct feedback about their experiences. It’s an amazing level of feedback, and I appreciate that all of you took time to let us know what you think.

We’ve read every message, categorized the feedback, and addressed the issues. On Tuesday, September 27th, we replaced our familiar tab/sub-tab navigation with a new menu system that will provide a better experience.

Our old navigation sometimes made it difficult to navigate to sub-tabs, and the new system replaces those tabs with more standard drop-down menus, with bigger target areas that are easier to hit with your mouse.

Some users asked why we’re replacing the menus now when there seem to be other areas that might be more valuable to work on. The new menus are part of a new foundation we’re building. These new menus are part of a complete replacement of our User Interface (UI) architecture.

Back in 2002 when we started work on Rally, the common design patterns for web applications were completely different. We’ve been incrementally enhancing our UI for nine years, making more use of AJAX and other current technologies. With this release, we’re moving our navigation and more our page rendering onto the client, significantly reducing the amount of data flying across the Internet and speeding performance.

  • We released the preview early, with known issues, in order to get usability feedback as quickly as possible. Those known issues (like support for Test Run screens) have been addressed, along with some bugs.
  • We’ve been releasing increments weekly. We have made a number of enhancements based on your feedback.
  • Some of you asked us to refine the look of the new menus.  We’ve made some improvements here too.

It’s true that navigation is not the biggest pain point our customers have. If you look in Rally Ideas, our #1 most promoted request is to support Rally in multiple browser tabs simultaneously. The great news is that with this release, as you use Rally, you’ll start to see the URL in your browser bar change as you navigate.   While we haven’t moved all page state into the URL yet, you’ll find that over the coming months, it’s becoming easier and easier to work with multiple views in Rally at the same time.
