Agile has long since crossed the chasm.   We are now seeing some of our largest companies scale Agile to co-ordinate product development across hundreds and even thousands of developers.  Development at this scale is complicated, maybe even chaotic and it is very natural that we seek to make it easier.

Most of us come from an engineering background and when faced with a difficult problem we use our scientific mind to help shine light on the problem.  The temptation is large, we want to get in front of the keyboard and write a program.

However we need to remember that companies are not machines to be programmed, they are living social organisms and very large ones at that.  You can’t win a tug of war with a huge animal; they won’t go anywhere they don’t want to go.

How do we shape a path, how do we motivate the elephant? In this session Ken Clyne will outline the challenges with large scale Agile transformation and share techniques that might help you avoid getting trampled.

The Agile Manifesto is now over 12 years old. That's ancient in technology years. The values and principles still hold true, and many organisations have adopted Agile at the team level. So what's next? Are we there yet? The answer is an emphatic no. The next challenge is standardizing and optimizing practices at the program level. Aligning multiple Agile teams across distributed systems to work on a common release is no easy feat. The Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) offers a proven and realistic roadmap for getting there. Hear from Rally's Rachel Weston Rowell, as she explains why now is the time to scale Agile with SAFe and how you can leverage it to take your Agile adoption, and your organisation, to the next level.

Organisation Flow is about achieving the Lean concept of flow at an organisation level. The complexity increases as we move from a single team or product focus to a cross-organisation portfolio focus.

This session will look at our approach to portfolio backlog management, and describe how we manage the flow of work through a portfolio of multiple products delivered by 50 teams in 6 locations across the US, Europe, India and China.

We will include examples of some core metrics that help understand throughput and flow in the organisation. These metrics tell a story about what is happening in the organisation. Lessons from these stories include understanding impediments to flow, and understanding who and what in the organisation is influencing flow.

How do managers find their place in an adaptive/Agile work culture? What does a manager do in the context of self-organising teams? How can you help your business achieve the promised benefits of Agile?  How do leaders foster collaboration resulting in motivated and engaged teams? This talk gives an overview of the tools Agile leaders rely on to build and support an Agile organisation.  It is a summary of the best of 12 years of learning about how to adopt, scale and transition teams and organisations into Agile businesses.

Continuous Flow is the regular and smooth progress of work from its initial concept to final consumption with minimal delay. This interactive session will explore what it means to achieve flow by contrasting a flow-based approach with other popular models. Attendees will use a number of process policies to construct Lego figures, capturing metrics and comparing results.

For the past decade, Rally has helped thousands of development teams deliver features their users love in half the time. In this session, we will talk about how the latest updates to Rally enable you to work even faster by using simple dashboards and custom views. We’ll also talk about how teams and programs work together in Rally to support higher-level program management outlined by SAFe v2.5. You will also get a sneak peak at some of our new features currently in development.

When scaling an Agile organisation there is often tension between aspects of the Agile mindset, such as autonomy and empowerment, and the organisation's need for governance, standards, compliance, and consistency.  A need that connot be overlooked as for many organisations without governance and compliance there is no business.

As with all things Agile this requires judgement and balance.  A balane can be easily attained if you are Agile with your methods and processes, and adopt a practice independent, result-focussed approach to governance, compliance and process assurance.

In this hands-on workshop, with case studies drawn from many large-scale Agile adoptions including KPN and Munich Re, attendees will learn how to monitor progress and health, and define result based governance and compliance practices.

This session uses the emerging SEMAT/OMG Essence standard, kernel and state cards to get hands on with results-based check points, check lists and health checks.

Using Rally and the Scaled Agile Framework®, TomTom has been able to radically change how we developed our 4th generation navigation solution.

We knew that we would not be able to deliver our new product line within the desired time-frame if we followed our standard waterfall based project approach. We made a decision to adopt SAFe and use Rally 12 months ago, as the basis of re-engineering software development within the Navigation Product Unit.

Learn how 25 scrum teams at TomTom, located in 6 countries, were able to successfully deliver a new product line on-time. Benefits achieved include a significant reduction in time-to-market, as well as an increase in quality.

With an organisation that is transitioning to Agile ways of working using Rally as the PPM tool. The initial stages of transition need a focus on defining how elements of the traditional PMO sit within the SAFe framework. There are also role changes that are brought about by adopting SAFe; the PMO (now called the PSC) role is about ensuring that these changes are managed.  PMO is traditionally seen as an administrative command and control function, in the SAFe space it changes to be more about providing servant leadership, coaching and support within the Portfolio Management environment.  Metrics are a feature of the portfolio layer and the PSC role is to ensure collaboration between all areas that provide information that is used to confirm the benefits from the value streams of work.

Bringing better products to the market faster is motivating companies to adopt agile methods and lean processes. Reports of successful implementation in single teams and small organizations can be found in many places. Driven by these promises, a large Swiss telecom provider decided to do “agile” for the development of its IP-based TV products. The new product development process shall foster innovation, shorten time to market, and be interweaved with strategic management and sister departments such as customer services, billing, or other business support systems.

A tailored portfolio management process built the foundation of the new agile land for integrating different methodologies such as Scrum, Software Kanban, hardware manufacturing processes, and traditional waterfall projects. The process is built on the principles of five levels of planning, a fixed rhythm of rituals, and fixed releases cycle. The process is implemented end-to-end in Rally.

The presentation will include details on the agile, end-to-end portfolio management process and the reasoning behind it, how the process was implemented and rolled out to more than hundred people in dependent projects providing a service for many thousands of customers. Tears of joy and pain will be shared with the audience.

Did you know that teams that keep their WiP very low have half the time-to-market and four times the quality of ones that have high WiP?

Agile coaches know the above statement is true, but they have never before had the data to quantify HOW TRUE. You can say to your management or your teams, let's change "x" and they may even trust you for a while, but to truely motivate change or to get funding to implement desired change, you must be able to put it into business terms. This work is focused on giving you the numbers to do just that.

For the last year, Rally Software has allowed me to crawl around in the data of almost 10,000 Agile projects. We have learned a lot from this analysis. Rally also sponsored the partnership with the Software Engineering Institute (SEI) at Carnegie Mellon to help validate this research. Come to this session to have your most passionate convictions about what Agile practices work and which ones do not confirmed with real data.

An Agile enterprise is one that reflects Agile and Lean values and principles. Agile development practices have been so successful at connecting the once isolated developer to his business user. DevOps extends the gains made with meeting business users' needs to operations' needs. The ultimate goal is to provide perfect value to the customer through a perfect value creation process (Lean) that has zero waste. However, Development (embrace change) and Operations (embrace stability) departments have different, and at times opposite objectives. Learn how BMC IT transformed development and operations teams to be the true enablers of change, delivering multi fold increase in MTTR, increasing stability, performance, reducing error rate and creating the Agile enterprise.
