Advantages

Upon completion of this service, a Kanban team will be able to:

  • Effectively execute a continuous flow development approach
  • Inspect and adapt their system design based on Agile and Lean principles and what they have learned through experience
  • Establish greater trust with customers and stakeholders through regular demos and reviews of running, tested features
  • Respond faster and more reliably to changing customer requests

Approach

The Kanban System Design service is divided into two parts, each designed to help development teams and managers effectively accelerate their adoption of Kanban.

Part I: Exploring Context & Designing Solution (2-day onsite workshop)

This session explores your current context in detail, introducing participants to Kanban concepts and creating a Kanban System which fits the context and enables improved effectiveness, coordination and reliability. Your Rally coach will help you understand your work type and flow, within the scope and boundaries of your existing process.

Part II: Continuous Improvement (2-day onsite workshop)

Your Rally coach will facilitate a review of how well the Kanban System is working and guide you through planning, implementing and measuring further improvements. They will help identify problem areas and will provide general consulting to help the team move forward with their Kanban System.

Further Continuous Improvement sessions can be bought to continue the Kanban journey.

On-Site Service Details

System Design workshop

This session helps the team learn to see their system with a critical, improvement-focused eye. The team will emerge with the basic concepts and system designs they need for executing and evolving a continuous flow system.

Here is an overview of what you and your coach can accomplish:

Day 1: “First seek to understand”

This interactive workshop prepares the entire team to apply Kanban in their business and cultural context. We explore the underlying principles of flow in the context of the team’s own workflow. At the end of the workshop, the team will have a shared perspective on how continuous flow processes behave as well as a common agreement on how work is currently performed.

Outline:

  • Understanding the Path
  • Value Stream Mapping
  • Kanban Mechanics
  • Kanban System Simulation
Day 2: System Design

This workshop allows the coach to explore the core concepts of an effective Kanban system followed by the design and construction of the team’s own system. While facilitated by your coach, it involves the entire Kanban team, including management. The coach will then assist the team in understanding aspects of the system that are not clear and define future goals. At the end of the workshop, the team will be ready to start flowing work through their Kanban system and understand the near-term goals that will allow ongoing improvement.

Outline:

  • Kanban Concepts
  • System Design
  • Special Topics
  • Retrospective
  • Action Planning

Kaizen and Refinement Session

In a return visit conducted three to four weeks after the initial visit, this two-day on-site session focuses on assessing the team's progress and guiding their next steps. Your Rally coach will then facilitate a retrospective, help diagnose current challenges, and help plan the next wave of system improvements.

Day 1: Kaizen

Your Rally coach joins the team in exploring their experiences over the previous month using a variety of retrospective techniques, assists in determining potential system designs for resolution of these challenges, and provides additional perspectives on how to both encourage and manage the pace of change within the system.

Outline:

  • Board and Policy Change Review
  • Metrics and Work Item Review
  • Retrospective
  • Design Update Session
Day 2: Targeted topics

Based on the results from the previous day, your Rally coach will guide the team through specific topics and exercises related to the identified needs. The team will also have an opportunity to engage in general consulting about their Agile and Lean practices going forward.
