Rally Workspace Types

User Story Workspace Overview

The User Story workspace is the default workspace type, and the one used by most Rally customers. It allows you to apply agile best practices to:

  • Build a backlog of user stories
  • Break stories down into any levels of sub-stories, schedule sub-stories into iterations and releases, and elaborate them incrementally
  • Track defects and test cases in the context of the user story to which they apply

The User Story workspace is ideally suited for teams that want:

  • To start their project with a high-level plan and then elaborate requirements incrementally
  • To break down requirements in a hierarchy
  • To practice Scrum or XP (or variants of these)
  • Automatic status and estimate rollups on larger stories

Use Case Workspace Overview

The Use Case workspace provides a structured set of requirements types, to elaborate Features with Use Cases and Supplemental requirements outside of the recommended iterative process.

Use this workspace type if you are required to:

  • Perform more detailed upfront planning
  • Use the Agile Unified Process or other UP variants
  • Document detailed Use Cases with scenarios, steps, and alternate flows

Please be aware that not all features are available in the Use Case workspace type that future features may not be supported in this workspace type, and that Rally is considering discontinuing this workspace type. To start using use case workspaces, contact customer support.
