As a complement to our Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) delivery model, Rally offers on-premises deployment for companies that wish to install, manage and maintain their Rally installation behind their corporate firewall.
Rally's on-premises solution provides the control and validation over third-party products that many regulated businesses require. Consider Rally's on-premises solution if your business:
- Requires that all company data reside behind your corporate firewall
- Must meet compliance guidelines governing company data management
- Has no internet access
Rally pre-configured virtual appliance: optimized for superior manageability
Installing Rally in your data center is a straightforward process that typically takes 2 to 3 hours to complete. Simply deploy the files on the installation DVD to your VMware® Server. There is no need to plan for a lengthy server setup or set aside time to build out a database.
What makes fast deployment possible?
Rally's on-premises solution is shipped as a virtualization appliance that utilizes VMware® to deliver a package that mimics the product stack of Rally's on-demand deployment model. The VMware® virtual appliance contains all of the components you need to run Rally on a standard server-class machine. It represents a complete, self-contained operating system, database and application server that all install without modification.
Rally has partnered with VMware® to deliver our on-premises solution because VMware® technology is the global leader in virtualization, server consolidation and infrastructure products. It works in any network environment, reducing components and simplifying service delivery. It reduces the hassles and complexity of traditional software installations by eliminating the need to separately configure an application server, database and OS.
Key features of Rally on-premises
Security and backups
You decide the best methods to safeguard your development project data at the application, network and data center layers. Rally provides administrative tools to enable automated backups and restarts, giving you full control over your backup schedule.
IT administrators can typically install Rally in 2 to 3 hours with little if any assistance. Rally's virtual appliance is designed to install like a simple executable on any application server and does not require a server setup procedure or database build-out.
Customization and integration
Rally's on-premises solution includes dozens of fully supported connectors for integrating Rally with popular development tools and IDEs. A copy of the Rally App Catalog is included on the installation DVD, providing access to Apps for extending Rally's functionality with custom interfaces, displays and charts. We also provide an App SDK with Component Library, allowing you to develop custom Apps or integrate Rally with any in-house or third-party development system through our web services API. Calls between the API and Rally's server are SSL-encrypted, so your data is always secure.
Configuration and administration
Your Rally virtual appliance ships with configuration tools to control user and license management, outbound communication and permissions. You set the policy and complexity rules for user credentials as well as individual access permissions. Additional configuration options allow you to deliver product email notifications from your domain, and integrate with your corporate LDAP services.
Product update flexibility
The on-premises version of Rally is updated several times per-year, giving administrators the option of upgrading or continuing to use your current version of Rally. Based upon your staffing schedule, you can stage the new product version in your development environment and stagger its distribution.

Installation and maintenance considerations
Rally has collaborated with our enterprise IT customers to estimate the staffing resources you should expect with Rally. They recommend allocating a 1/4- or 1/2-time administrator. Your Rally administrator will oversee user access as well as firewall, server and security configuration. They will also need to devise and manage a process to handle application updates, patches and automated backups. We recommend implementing an offsite backup strategy to ensure that your data can be recovered in case of a catastrophic failure.
