Europe’s largest online prescription eyewear store, Glasses Direct, sells a pair of prescription glasses every few minutes.

Challenged with a development environment that considered itself Agile, but was not in practice, Glasses Direct was ripe for a development reinvention. Encompassing processes and business functions including manufacturing, the online front-end retail storefront as well as back-end administration and fulfillment, the technology group had a variety of product owners and myriad requirements. The new CTO, Mark Wood, brought in his Agile experience and benchmarks from a feasibility study followed by an enterprise-wide transition to Scrum conducted at his previous employer, Betfair. The Agile appeal was four-fold: understand the large scope view – visibility across all requirements at once; clear user stories that can be broken into discrete units; enhance team communication and cohesion; and a set period for development cycles with complete transparency.
